'Holidangers': Preventing drunk driving this holiday season

13News Now sat down with Brandy Brubaker, a DMV spokesperson, to find out the best way to prevent drinking and driving.

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- The holiday season means reuniting with friends and family... that means lots of love, laughter, and sometimes a little liquor.

This time of the year brings with it an uptick in drinking and driving accidents.

The Virginia DMV says nearly half of the fatal accidents on New Year's Day involve alcohol.

DMV, state and local police are increasing enforcement efforts all December, in an effort to keep drivers safe.

DMV officials encourage people to consider alternate choices of transportation when driving: cab, public transit, designated driver or Uber/Lyft.
