Part of I-264 to close for July 4 fireworks in Va. Beach

With a big crowd expected at the Oceanfront for Fourth of July celebrations, part of Interstate 264 will be shut down Tuesday night, ahead of the fireworks.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- With a big crowd expected at the Oceanfront for Fourth of July celebrations, part of Interstate 264 will be shut down Tuesday night, ahead of the fireworks.

Starting at 8 p.m., drivers on I-264 Eastbound will get turned around on Parks Avenue, and redirected onto I-264 Westbound. This is near the Virginia Beach convention center.

The closure and detour will continue until 1 a.m. Wednesday.

Two other exits will shut down: Eastbound at South Birdneck and Westbound at First Colonial.

Here are the routes into the resort area that will stay open: General Booth Boulevard, Virginia Beach Boulevard, Laskin Road and Shore Drive.

The deputy city manager is asking people to arrive at the Oceanfront early, and be patient when leaving after the show.

Fireworks start at 9:30.
