CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WVEC) -- A car crash involving a police officer shut down all lanes of southbound Interstate 464 in Chesapeake during Tuesday morning's rush hour.
The accident happened near the Military Highway exit and involved a Chesapeake police car and another vehicle shortly before 5:30 a.m.
Investigators say an officer assisting a private contractor in stopping southbound traffic for a road closure. The officer's vehicle had its emergency lights activated at the time, when the officer saw a vehicle speeding towards him. The vehicle struck the officer's car, causing significant damage.
All lanes were closed for a time, with traffic diverted off the exit ramp.
Shortly before 7 a.m. traffic began moving again, although one lane remained closed. The accident was completely cleared a short time later.
The officer and driver of the vehicle were both taken to the hospital for minor injuries.
The accident remains under investigation. Police say charges are pending against the other driver.
