Thanksgiving travel tips

Travel reminders ahead of Thanksgiving

(WVEC) -- Millions of people are expected to be away from home for Thanksgiving. AAA projects nearly 49 million people will be on a plane, train or automobile. Travel experts are telling people to be prepared, and patient.

With gas prices low, many people will be hitting the road. If you can it's a good idea to map out your road trip. Phone apps and AAA can point out key locations like rest stops, gas stations and construction. Debra Smith tells 13News Now her parents are driving from Alabama to Norfolk, a 12-hour drive.

"They're gonna leave early, they're gonna leave around 2 o'clock in the morning to try to get ahead of some of the traffic, because it's gonna be very heavy," said Smith.

For those taking to the air Georjean Blumling with AAA said preparation is key. That includes being at the airport at least two hours before your flight.

"If you don't travel a lot by air, it's important to know what those rules are about what you can bring on the plane, how much liquid you can bring, and what's gonna happen at security," she said.
