McAuliffe encourages people to 'Know Your Zone' for hurricane evacuations

Governor Terry McAuliffe visited Hampton to talk about the "Know Your Zone" initiative which sets forth a new plan for hurricane evacuations.

HAMPTON, Va. (WVEC) -- Governor Terry McAuliffe stopped in Hampton Roads Thursday, encouraging people to familiarize themselves with Know Your Zone, a new plan for safer evacuations during hurricanes and other disasters.

State officials and a global engineering firm based in Florida worked closely with emergency managers throughout Hampton Roads, the Northern Neck, the Middle Peninsula, and the Eastern Shore to develop tiered evacuation zones.

People who don't have Internet access can contact their local emergency managers or call 2-1-1 to get help in identifying their new evacuation zones. 

McAuliffe said the plan will streamline the evacuation process by providing accurate and useful information to people based on their street addresses.
