Norfolk hands out 'Know Your Zone' evacuation stickers

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- This has been one of the deadliest hurricane seasons in recent years. Hampton Roads has come out unscathed so far, but in the event of an emergency, city officials want to make sure you know the proper evacuation procedures.

In Norfolk, volunteers and city employees fanned throughout the city to make sure people know their zone. Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma are a devastating reminders of the importance in knowing what to do in an emergency.

"We don't want a mass amount of people to be just escaping to get out of harm's way. It needs to happen effectively and decisively," said Melissa Leahy, intern with the city's emergency management.

Groups put evacuation zones on trash bins and on dumpsters at apartment complexes. Zone A is blue, B is green, C, yellow and D red.

In total, the city is putting out around 81,000. If you don't see a sticker at your home yet, don't worry, crews will be putting stickers out through October.
