Bill could lower some prescription costs

The bill would let pharmacists tell their customers if a prescription would be cheaper without using their health insurance.

RICHMOND, Va. (WVEC) -- A bill aimed at helping people find the cheapest price for prescription drugs is headed to Governor Ralph Northam's desk.

The bill would let pharmacists tell their customers if a prescription would be cheaper without using their health insurance.

Under current law, passing that information along could be a breach of contract between the pharmacy and its "benefit manager." Those are the middlemen between pharmacies, drug manufacturing companies, and health insurance providers.

If the bill is signed, it will take effect as soon as July.
