Memorial Day is often thought of as the beginning of summer, but more importantly, it is a day to remember American service members who paid the ultimate price for our freedom.

Memorial Day is often thought of as the beginning of summer, but more importantly, it is a day to remember American service members who paid the ultimate price for our freedom.

13News Now has put together a list honorable events around Hampton Roads for families to participate in.

In Norfolk, the Memorial Day Ceremony will be held near the battleship Wisconsin at Wisconsin Square on Monday, May 28 at 2 p.m. Vice Admiral Bruce H. Lindsey, Deputy Commander of the U.S. Fleet Forces Command. Norfolk’s Memorial Day Ceremony also features performances by the U.S. Fleet Forces Band and POW/MIA table by Norfolk Combined Veterans Organizations. The event is co-sponsored by the Mayor’s Commission on Veterans Affairs.

In Chesapeake, a Memorial Day ceremony will be held at the Chesapeake Veterans' Memorial, located in front of Chesapeake City Hall at 306 Cedar Rd. The ceremony will be hosted by the Mayor's Commission on Veterans Affairs. The program will honor all who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. It will begin at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 28.

In Newport News, an annual ceremony for Memorial Day will be held on Monday, May 28. The ceremony will be held at the Virginia War Museum. The event is sponsored by American Legion, Braxton-Perkins Post #25. The ceremony begins at 11 a.m. and is located at the Victory Arch, on 25th Street and West Avenue. After the ceremony, the public can explore the museum and learn more about America's rich military history. On Memorial Day, visitors are treated to $1 off admission. Click here to learn more.

In Hampton, the Memorial Day Service and Flag Retirement Ceremony will be on Monday, May 28 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Fort Monroe - Colonies and RV Travel Park. Military service members who made the ultimate sacrifice will be honored. In addition, U.S. flags no longer usable will be retired. Seating is limited; please bring a chair if possible. The City of Portsmouth is holding its annual Memorial Day Parade.

A Portsmouth tradition since 1884, the annual Memorial Day Parade salutes the service and sacrifices of the men and women of the United States Armed Forces and celebrates Portsmouth's proud military heritage.

Enjoy floats, marching bands and lots of excitement. The parade begins at 10 a.m. Monday and travels on High Street from Peninsula Avenue (at I.C. Norcom High School) to Crawford Street.

In Virginia Beach, people are invited to attend the annual Tidewater Veterans Memorial Day Ceremony, sponsored by the Mayor's Veterans Committee is held to honor and pay tribute to the men and women of the armed forces, "who gave their all." The formal ceremony is scheduled for Monday, May 28 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Virginia Beach Convention Center, 2nd Floor, Suite 5. The event was originally planned for the Tidewater Veterans Memorial but was relocated due to expected inclement weather. This event is free and open to the public. Military personnel, their families, and all citizens are invited to participate.

In Suffolk, the Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery will have a ceremony on Monday. The ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. and a Memorial Day monument dedication will be held afterward.

In Colonial Williamsburg, a commemorative ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, May 28 on the Governor's Palace Green.

In Yorktown, a Memorial Day Ceremony will be held at York Hall on Monday from 12 to 1 p.m. There will be a posting of colors, historical re-enactors, guest speaker, and the placing of flowers. The address is 301 Main Street, Yorktown VA 23690.
