Tracking fall foliage in Hampton Roads

What's delaying the colorful seasonal shift?

NORFOLK, Va. — Fall is one of the most beautiful times of the year.

The color change and that vibrant seasonal shift is what most of us look forward to.

We go from green to orange, then red and yellow.

But what’s the hold up this year?

The production of chlorophyll is behind it all.

Chlorophyll is responsible for the green color we see in plants.

For chlorophyll to break down and reveal the natural red, yellow and orange colors in many plants, cooler temperatures and sunshine are ideal.

We’ve had a lot of sun lately, but it’s been far from cool in Hampton Roads.

September was one of the hottest on record, and we rose into 90-degree temps at the start of October.

That means the green will stick around a little longer.

But you can check out this map, showing predictions for peak fall foliage across the country.
