Family remembers a working mother of two who was killed while delivering food

People planned to hold a vigil for Stephanie Brainerd who died after someone shot her in Chesapeake while she was delivering pizzas.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A family gathered Sunday to remember 30-year-old Stephanie Brainerd from Virginia Beach.

Brainerd was delivering pizzas in Chesapeake when she was killed last week.

Investigators said that around 9:44 p.m. on Thursday, police responded to the Marina Point Apartment Complex for a "shots heard in the area" call. When officers arrived, they found Brainerd shot to death inside a vehicle.

Shortly after she was found, additional officers attempted to stop a vehicle for reckless driving in the area. A short chase ensued, which ended in Portsmouth near Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center.

It is unknown if the shooting and the chase are connected.

Brainerd’s family gathered together to remember her at Mt. Trashmore, which is where Brainerd regularly took her two children to play. Brainerd’s sister Chrissy Wood said that the whole family is devastated.

"They're going to suffer for this for the rest of their life, without their mother,” said Wood.

Wood said that no matter what time, or place, Brainerd would be there to help.

"She would always give the shirt off her back, the last penny to her name, just to make sure life was easier for someone else. Our family will always remember her for her kindness and her compassion,” said Wood.

The family is holding a vigil for Brainerd at the Chanello’s on George Washington Highway at 7 p.m. Monday.
