Finally below $4: Nationally, gas prices drop significantly for first time since March

Prices are expected to continue decreasing amidst lower demand, which is a result of historically high prices earlier in the year.

NORFOLK, Va. — National gas prices fell below $4 per gallon Tuesday, and they are expected to continue decreasing as Americans maintain altered driving patterns to avoid using gas like they did before.

A spokesperson for the fuel savings platform GasBuddy said Tuesday that the national average price of gas had dropped to $3.99 per gallon for the first time since early March of 2022.

That's over a dollar lower per gallon than the national average on June 14, when national gas prices peaked at $5.03 per gallon, the spokesperson said.

Gas prices in Hampton Roads were sitting at $3.81 per gallon Monday after falling from $3.96 last week.

That's also down from $4.56 a month ago. It's up though from a year ago when prices were averaging $2.96, according to AAA Tidewater.

Even though gas prices are heading back towards where they were a year ago, people are still maintaining habits that will ultimately help prices continue to decrease.

Fewer drivers than usual filled up last week. That trend shows that drivers have changed their driving patterns to accommodate higher gas prices, AAA Tidewater said.

If demand for gas remains lower than usual, and the supply continues to increase alongside falling oil prices, AAA Tidewater said that drivers will likely see prices continue to decrease.

AAA found that 64% of U.S. adults have altered their driving habits since March.

The three main changes that AAA found people to be making are: driving less, combining errands and reducing shopping or dining out.
