NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- I knew I was in for a challenge when A. Dodson's owner Allison Anderson talked to me when I first interviewed her.
"It's a lot of estrogen going through here with 30 plus employees, I'm not going to lie to you. But we could probably use a male around here," she said.
The real reason I was here was to give these folks some much deserved publicity. They donate to non-profits - about $1500 each month, as they ask customers to round up to the next dollar or more.
"We're very big into taking less and giving more that's our mission," said president Kathy Lovko.
In fact these folks just won a national Independent We Stand Award, sponsored by STIHL, Inc. and it came with a $5,000 cash prize. Allison took that money and donated it to the HER Shelter in Portsmouth. Bill Brunelle with Independent We Stand said he was most impressed with Allison's gesture, and the way she gives to Roc Solid, the Foodbanks and Cerebral Palsy.
"The HER shelter is in the process of building a new shelter out in the Western Branch section of Chesapeake and so we want to help them get that off the ground. We knew they had a matching sponsor and so our five thousand became ten thousand dollars for them," Allison said.
Good people and I enjoyed my little time training as a sales associate. Could I cut it? I don't think so. But good on you Allison Anderson for a great business philosophy of giving to others.
