VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) — AAA projects that 54.3 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home this Thanksgiving.
The projection is a 4.8 increase over last year. The 2018 holiday weekend will see the highest Thanksgiving travel since 2005, with 2.5 million more people taking to the roads, skies, rails, and waterways compared to previous years.
In Virginia, over 1.3 million will be traveling this holiday, a 4.8 percent increase from last year. This marks the highest number of travelers since 2005.
“Consumers have a lot to be thankful for this holiday season: higher wages, more disposable income and rising levels of household wealth,” said Georjeane Blumling, Vice President of Public Affairs for AAA Tidewater Virginia. “This is translating into more travelers kicking off the holiday season with a Thanksgiving getaway, building on a positive year for the travel industry.”
The Thanksgiving holiday period is defined as Wednesday, November 22 to Sunday, November 26.
According to AAA, the top 10 Thanksgiving destinations are as follows:
