Failed 'People Express' airline founder jailed for fraud

Michael Morisi, the former head of a now-defunct airline out of Newport News, will serve two years behind bars for fraud involving millions of dollars.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The founder of a failed startup airline out of Newport News has been sent to prison.

Michael Morisi will serve two years behind bars for fraud involving millions of dollars.

People Express Airlines briefly flew out of Newport News-Williamsburg International Airport. 

Morisi was arrested in May of 2019 for wire fraud and filing a false income tax return.

The judge ordered him to pay more than $500,000 in restitution to an investor, the airport, and the IRS.
