Man charged with murder after body found in lake in Virginia Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Virginia Beach police said Thursday they arrested someone for the murder of a man whose body turned up in Lake Lawson/Lake Smith in July 2018.

William Alberto Oliva Rodriguez, 25, is accused of killing 19-year-old Jairo Armando Sanchez-Guardado.

Kayakers found Sanchez-Guardado's body in Lake Lawson/Lake Smith around 10 a.m. on July 6, 2018. His body was near the shoreline in the 1200 block of Habitat Lane. Court document said someone shot Sanchez-Guardado in the back of the head.

Police found items under Sanchez-Guardado's body that hoped would lead them to his killer. Court documents said they recovered a beer bottle, cigarette, and a lanyard with a truck key. Investigators found out the lanyard and key belonged to Sanchez-Guardado.

Officers charged Rodriguez, whose address is in the 1800 block of East Little Creek Road in Norfolk, with second-degree murder charge. He was in the Virginia Beach Correctional Center Thursday.
