DC police officer who almost died on the job finishes first 5K race

Officer Bukvic was left with 37 broken bones after he was run over by a pick-up truck in Adams Morgan. He spent months in the hospital and couldn't walk.

WASHINGTON - Officer Alen Bukvic's recovery is truly remarkable.

On June 9, 2017, Officer Bukvic and his partner were on their bikes patrolling in Adams Morgan when a suspect ran over them with a pick-up truck.

Bukvic went flying 65 feet into the air. He was in critical condition.

"My biggest injury is that one of my ribs went through my heart and it punctured my heart, so I had internal bleeding," he explained.

Bukvic had 17 broken ribs and 37 broken bones in total. He was in the hospital for two months and couldn't walk.

"You start feeling sorry for yourself," he said.

Fast forward one year. He has now completed a 5K race.

"That was my dream and luckily the police 5K came along," said Officer Bukvic.

Earlier in May, Bukvic finished that race with his police brothers and sisters by his side.

Sergeant Shawn Rooney was there.

"He was still in a lot of pain," Rooney said. "Just to have the heart to come back from that is amazing."

Bukvic said he couldn't do it without the encouragement of those closest to him.

He's currently on limited duty, but is planning on transitioning back to full duty in the next few weeks.

Brandon Figures-Mormon, 24, the suspect accused of running over Bukvic and his partner, will go on trial next month.
