According to VDOT District Communications Manager Holly Christopher, Marakos will be billed around $25,000 for damages inside the tunnel.

Christopher said there was no severe structural damage and that the tunnel is stable. However, nine sections of handrail, two internal lights and several sections of wall tile were damaged.

Repairs will likely happen next week during regularly-scheduled overnight lane closures by VDOT maintenance crews.

Eight vehicles were involved in the chain reaction crash. Only one person was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.
