KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. — Kill Devil Hills police, fire crews and Dare County EMS responded to a three-vehicle crash that sent two people to the hospital on Tuesday.

Around 4:03 p.m. Brittany Cox, 32, driving a blue 2005 Mazda, was traveling west of East Chowan Street and stopped at U.S. 158.

Cox crossed the highway and was t-boned by a 2004 GMC Yukon.

The impact caused both vehicles to veer from the northbound lanes of U.S. 158 and cross over into the southbound lanes of U.S. 158. A 2002 Toyota pickup truck traveling southbound then hit the Mazda on the passenger side.

Cox had to be extricated by fire crews. She suffered critical injuries and was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. The driver of the Yukon was taken to The Outer Banks Hospital for treatment. The driver of the Toyota was evaluated at the scene.

The drivers of the Yukon and Toyota were wearing their seat belts. Cox, of Kill Devil Hills, was not wearing her seat belt.

Police said the driver of the Yukon is a 70-year-old resident of Grandy, N.C. The driver of the Toyota is a 67-year-old resident of Kitty Hawk, N.C.

Charges are pending for Cox for careless and reckless operation of a motor vehicle and possession of a controlled substance.
