VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) -- An Eastern Shore man who just happened to be passing through Virginia Beach and bought a Virginia Lottery Scratcher ticket, ended up winning a $5 million prize.

“I was just passing by and I thought I’d try my luck,” he later said.

That turned out to be a $5 million decision. He bought a 50X the Money ticket that ended up winning the top prize.

“I was excited,” he said. “I couldn’t sleep that night.”

The Virginia Lottery presented Addison Matthews with an oversized check Tuesday at the Rite Aid on Virginia Beach Blvd. where he bought the ticket.

He had a choice of taking the full $5 million in annual payments over 30 years or a one-time cash option of $2,808,989 before taxes. He chose the cash option.

In addition, the store received a $10,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.

Matthews, who describes himself as “semi-retired,” said he has no immediate plans for his winnings.
