IN SESSION: AAA recognizes local safety patrol students

Ten local students will soon be inducted into the AAA Safety Patrol Hall of Fame, including two from the same school in Virginia Beach.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A pair of students in Virginia Beach make it their personal mission to keep their school hallways safe and orderly, and it’s earning them special recognition.

Centerville Elementary fifth-graders Gabe Woods and Jaelyn Isip are official AAA Safety Patrol members.

“As safety patrols, we follow the rules and do the right thing,” Jaelyn said. “I make sure they’re walking, not running, they’re doing what they’re supposed to do... no hitting or touching each other, basic classroom rules."

The pair enforce the rules in order to live out their motto of being safe, respectful and responsible.

Now AAA is honoring the students’ year-long dedication to the job by inducting them into the “21st Annual AAA Tidewater Safety Patrol Hall of Fame.”

“I feel like I’m being a good role model in helping the school,” Gabe said.

Gabe and Jaelyn are among 10 local students to receive the honor this year. The students, who were nominated by their supervisor and selected by AAA, are the only ones from Virginia Beach City Public Schools to be inducted this year.

The full list of local inductees for 2018-19 is as follows:

  • Anastasia Jones from Cedar Roads Elementary in Chesapeake
  • Corimah Smith from Victory Elementary in Portsmouth
  • Elizabeth Shelton from Carrollton Elementary in Carrollton
  • Gabriel Woods from Centerville Elementary in Virginia Beach

The awards dinner and induction ceremony will be held Friday, June 7 at the Lake Wright Hotel in Norfolk.

AAA has been sponsoring the School Safety Patrol program for more than 80 years. It was first formed locally in Norfolk in 1930.
