Schools begin to announce closings, cancellations ahead of potential snowfall

Some school districts are beginning to make preparations ahead of the potential snowfall.

NORFOLK, Va. — It's a cool, mild day on Wednesday, but the forecast shows big changes are on the way over the next two days.

The area could see its first substantial snowfall in about two years!

North Carolina

  • Bertie County Public Schools - Closing at 1 p.m. Thursday; will open on a 2-hour delay Friday
  • Currituck County Public Schools - Closing 2 hours early Thursday
  • Edenton-Chowan Public Schools - Closing at 1 p.m. Thursday
  • Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools - Closing 2 hours early Thursday
  • Gates County Public Schools - Closing at 1 p.m. Thursday
  • Hertford County Public Schools - Closing at 12:30 p.m. Thursday
  • Northeast Academy for Aerospace and Advanced Technologies - Closing at 12:30 p.m. Thursday
  • Perquimans County Public Schools - Closing at 1 p.m. Thursday
  • Victory Christian School, Elizabeth City - Closing at 12:30 p.m. Thursday

Virginia

  • Chesapeake Public Schools - all after-school and evening activities canceled Thursday
  • Hampton Public Schools - all after-school and evening activities canceled Thursday
  • Isle of Wight County Public Schools - all after-school and evening activities canceled Thursday
  • Newport News Public Schools - all after-school and evening activities canceled Thursday
  • Norfolk Public Schools - all after-school and evening activities canceled Thursday
  • Portsmouth Public Schools - On early release schedule. All after-school and evening activities canceled Thursday; school board meeting is canceled
  • Suffolk Christian Academy - closing early at 1 p.m. All aftercare and evening activities are closed. 
  • Southampton County Schools - Early dismissal. Secondary schools closing at noon. Elementary schools closing at 1 p.m.
  • Global Engineers Acadamy - Closing early at 4:30 p.m.

At this time, Old Dominion University says it is monitoring the weather situation and will send out any updates through its ODU Alerts System.
