Teen killed after moped rear-ended in Hampton identified

16-year-old Daquan Robinson died when his moped was rear-ended by a pickup truck at a stoplight in Hampton, then crashed into two other cars.

HAMPTON, Va. (WVEC) -- Family members have identified the teenager who died after his moped was involved in a four-vehicle crash in Hampton on Monday night.

Daquan Robinson, 16, died in the crash, and another teen who was riding the moped is still in the hospital.

According to officials, around 7:20 p.m. Emergency Communications received a call about an accident at the intersection of West Pembroke Avenue and Powhatan Parkway.

A moped, a pick-up truck, a rental box truck, and a 4-door sedan were involved in the crash. Police said the two 16-year-old boys were sitting at a stoplight on their moped, waiting to turn left at the intersection when they were struck from behind by a pickup truck driven by a 60-year-old man.

The pickup truck and moped both continued through the intersection, where the vehicles struck a turning Nissan Maxima and a Hertz rental box truck that was stopped at a light.

Robinson's family members said the teen was on the honor roll and had his moped for less than two months.

"He was 16 and full of life," said cousin Kourtney Robinson. "He loved his family, he played football at Hampton High School, number 5 on the team, he loved his dog. He loved everything. He was really quiet too."

The teens were taken to the hospital, where Robinson was pronounced dead.

The passenger is in stable condition.

The 60-year-old pickup truck driver and two people who were inside the rental box truck were hospitalized with what police say were non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash remains under investigation by the members of the Hampton Police Division’s Reconstruction Team.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
