American Cancer Society: early colorectal cancer screenings can save lives

March recognizes one of the most common cancers worldwide and the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States. Now experts are saying that people should get tested earlier

CHESAPEAKE, Va. —

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness month, and the American Cancer Society wants to remind everyone that early screening for this cancer can be lifesaving.

Colorectal cancer, or colon cancer, develops in the colon or rectum. It is preventable and even curable in its early stages.

This is why The American Cancer Society recommends that people begin screening at 45. People who have a family history of colon polyps or cancer are recommended to begin screenings earlier.

A colonoscopy exam is the most direct way to screen for pre-cancerous polyps. This procedure is low-risk and many patients can return to their regular life the same day.

Experts also say a healthy diet and regular exercise can also lower the risk of Colon Cancer.
