Popular Outer Banks tourism sites close for coronavirus

Visitors centers at the Cape Hatteras National Seashore and Wright Brothers National Memorial are temporarily closed. Their grounds are still open.

NAGS HEAD, N.C. — The Cape Hatteras National Seashore announced Tuesday that it would be closing certain popular Outer Banks tourism spots to minimize the potential spread of COVID-19.

It said the visitors centers at the seashore, Fort Raleigh National Historic Site and the Wright Brothers National Memorial were closing immediately.

The grounds of the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site and the Wright Brothers National Memorial will stay open.

This announcement came the same day Dare County announced it would be generally restricting visitor access, starting at 2 p.m.

The release said that although these visitors centers - and Oregon Inlet Campground -  were temporarily closed, the grounds of Bodie Island, Cape Hatteras and Ocracoke Lighthouses are still open.

The seashore is canceling the Ocracoke Island roadside cleanup that had been scheduled for March 26.
