Authorities: Missing Southampton mom was abducted, mother hopeful

Investigators said they have developed a possible suspect vehicle as a silver Chrysler 200 or a similar model connected to the disappearance of Cynthia Carver.

NEWSOMS, Va. — Detectives working to find a Southampton County woman who has been missing for nearly two weeks believe she was abducted, and that she was traveling in Portsmouth and Norfolk on the day of her disappearance.

34-year-old Cynthia Carver has not been seen since February 22, when she dropped her children off at a babysitter's house.

Carver, a correctional officer, didn't show up at work Friday morning causing her family to worry.

Police found blood and a knife inside Carver's home, but there was no sign of her. The mother's purse, wallet, and phone were also missing.

During a press conference on Tuesday, investigators said they have developed a possible suspect vehicle as a silver Chrysler 200 or a similar model, which was seen leaving her residence on the night of her abduction. Police also said they had several persons of interest, but did not provide details.

The FBI also believes Carver was on Airline Boulevard in Portsmouth and North Military Highway in Norfolk on the day she was abducted.

The search is also being extended into North Carolina.

‘‘Whoever got her and took her please bring her home to her kids,” said mother Ann Carver.

Carver delivered a heartfelt plea after learning from investigators, what she presumed all along, that her daughter was abducted.

“Everyone around her loves Cynthia. I don’t know why anyone would want to take her or hurt her,” said Carver.

Carver also said her daughter going to Norfolk and Portsmouth hours before she disappeared does not raise a red flag.

“Well she goes there to get her hair fixed and maybe get her groceries and evidently she was there and she came back home,” said Carver.

The Southampton County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone who has contact with Cynthia Carver before or since her disappearance on Feb. 22 to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 757-653-2100.
