Community rallies around 5-year-old whose foot got caught in lawnmower blades

Jackson Scalf had severe injuries to his foot after he fell off a riding lawnmower.

GLOUCESTER COUNTY, Va. (WVEC) -- A mishap while a 5-year-old was riding a lawnmower with his father is bringing a huge amount of support from the community.

Many people who live in Gloucester County know the John Scalf and his family.

Scalf is the head football coach at Gloucester High School. His wife, Karen, is a choir teacher at Page Middle School.

This past weekend, 5-year-old Jackson Scalf was on a lawnmower with his dad when Jackson fell off. His foot got caught under the blades.

Karen Scalf soon started getting frantic texts.

"He's our active little boy, He runs and rides bikes, so I was in panic," Karen said.

The incident left Jackson with several broken bones in his foot and several stitches. He is home recovering, but he will be out of school for a while.

Karen's friend, Jamie Williams, heard what happened to Jackson and wanted to do something to help the family. Williams created a Gofundme page to raise money so that Karen can afford to stay home with Jackson while he recovers.

People are sharing the page all over social media.

"I knew it would be an outpouring of support," Williams told 13News Now.

"Thank you, because now I get to stay with my baby some more, and he wants his mom," said Karen Scalf who, while taken aback by the community outpouring, wasn't entirely surprised, recognizing that's what people in Gloucester do: look after one another.
