Discover Yourself: Food sensitivity test

Tests are available that make it easy to answer your food sensitivity questions.

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) -- Have you ever eaten something, and it just doesn't sit well with your body? So, are you allergic to an ingredient, intolerant to it, or just ate too much?

There are now tests that make it easy for your to figure out the answer to all your food sensitivity questions.

First, it's important to understand whether you are actually having an allergic reaction or just intolerant to something.

According to experts at the Mayo Clinic, when you are allergic to a food item, your immune system literally goes into attack form. You experience symptoms such as hives, itching, wheezing, abdominal pain, difficulty breathing. The symptoms can be deadly.

On the other hand, if you are just sensitive to something you ate, you are more likely to experience symptoms such as upset stomach, bloat, and headaches.

If you don't think you are struggling from food allergies, tests like EverlyWell and TestMyAllergy can help you understand what's making you feel unwell.

EverlyWell is a popular option and appeared on Shark Tank. It will set you back nearly $200.

13News Now anchor Kristina Robinson went with a test found on AllergyTest.co. It cost $70.

The process was relatively painless. Pluck a few hairs out, and send them to the lab. Ten days later, the results were in.

For Kristina, the results helped clear up some confusion on whether she is gluten intolerant. Next step was cutting the foods that she was sensitive to out of her diet. After about a week, she felt her energy levels go up and noticed a difference in the clarity of her skin.

It's important to note, that the test only helps with intolerances and does not substitute a visit to the doctor if you suspect you are allergic to a certain food item.
