Hampton conference empowers women veterans, military spouses

Organizers of the 3rd Annual Women's Veteran Conference wanted to empower and uplift transitioning military women and spouses.

HAMPTON, Va. (WVEC) — Women veterans and military spouses are learning side by side.

Thursday in Hampton, they came together to talk about education, employment resources, dressing for success and life after the military.

“There's a need and people don't realize what's out there,” Community Business Relations Coordinator for Virginia Career Works Greater Peninsula Lisa Taylor said. “They're our nation's best-kept secret.”

It was all part of the Women's Veteran Conference, “Women Veterans, the Nation’s Best Kept Secret”. It was held at the Peninsula Workforce Center.

“We wanted to empower them through education and resources,” Eastern Regional Veteran Manager with Jobs for Veteran State Grant/Virginia Employment Commission Paige Glass said.

From networking opportunities, where they can get job assistance, learning about different programs that can help pay for education as well as different resources available to them to help them get jobs, organizers wanted to let women know what's out there for them.

“Female veterans sometimes get left behind so we wanted to provide the information they needed to better prepare themselves when they go out in the community and search for jobs,” Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist with Jobs for Veteran State Grant/Virginia Employment Commission Tshambi Hall said. “We want them to know they're valued.”

“I’m hoping they’re empowered to get back into the workforce,” Glass said.

YNC, (AW) Retired U.S. Navy Kelly Wilken was the keynote speaker.

The Virginia Employment Commission teamed up with several organizations such as the Department of Veteran Services, Soldier for Life: Transitional Assistance Program and Virginia Career Works Hampton Center.
