Hampton deputies take seniors Christmas shopping

The Hampton Sheriff's Office transported and escorted a busload of senior citizens to Target located at the Peninsula Town Center for an afternoon of shopping.

HAMPTON, Va. (WVEC) — Some senior citizens got a fun day of Christmas shopping with their own personal helpers.

The Hampton Sheriff's Office transported and escorted a busload of senior citizens to Target located at the Peninsula Town Center for an afternoon of shopping.

Sheriff B. J. Roberts sponsored the annual shopping trip for senior citizens may need transportation. Lt. Alonzo Cherry said this the 18th year for the event.

“They may not get out to do this kind of shopping during the holiday season. So we think providing transportation that we do and an escort you can't get any better than that,” said Cherry.

The Hampton Sheriff’s Office partnered with the Peninsula Agency on Aging’s Congregate Dining Club program. Just over a dozen seniors will be picked up for the shopping trip and then taken to lunch afterward.

Audrey Glover said the trip allowed her to pick up a few things she needed and some treats.

“I picked up some oatmeal I needed that and maybe two things I didn’t really need too much but it’s the holidays so picked me up a little licorice which I don’t find often.

Overall Glover said the day out shopping was beautiful.

“I’m so thankful for the sheriff’s office to allow us, seniors, to come out and go shopping. It’s just been awesome and I am truly happy and grateful for this day,” said Glover.
