HAMPTON, Va. (WVEC) -- It's a unique way to raise money for Relay for Life in the fight against cancer. They do it, by putting their best foot forward.
The World Adult Kickball Association (WAKA) in Hampton, held its third annual Kick Cancer fundraising tournament last Saturday. Perhaps no one was more appreciative than Nikki Nicole, a player in the league who's also a 3-time cancer survivor.
"I've had cervical cancer twice, stomach cancer once, and it just sucks that there's no cure for this disease," Nikki said.
On the positive side, Nikki has gained enormous support in her battles with cancer thanks to her league.
"Oh this league is everything," Nikki said. "My doctor told me it's good that you are active because a lot of people who have gone through situations that you've been in medically would've had a tougher time overcoming the issues that I've had."
That's not the only reason why Nikki is so appreciative of her kickball buddies.
"I've had people who would come to the house and bring me food in my time of need when I couldn't get up and make dinners for myself," she said. "They would post things to my Facebook page and send text messages and just words of encouragement."
Since 2013, WAKA in Hampton has raised more than $18,000 for Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society. They play their league games every Wednesday night at War Memorial Stadium in Hampton and this season, the most powerful color on the field is pink.
"It's far more than kickball, this league is everything this is like a family."
"All these guys are out here wearing pink in support of breast cancer awareness and I couldn't be more proud," Nikki said. "It's far more than kickball, this league is everything. This is like a family."
