CHESAPEAKE, Va. — Chesapeake police are warning residents about a recent phone scam.

The scam involves a caller stating to the victim that they owe money "for various reasons" and the victim is told to report to a location to make a payment, police said.

The scammer uses Caller ID spoofing to make it look like the call is coming from Chesapeake Police Dispatch.

Officials said Chesapeake Police Department officials will not call citizens and demand payment.

"If we need something from a citizen an Officer would come to them with proper identification," officials said in a news release.

If an Officer or Detective calls a citizen and they are unsure of the caller’s identity, they can verify who the caller is through Police Dispatch at 757-382-6161 or by contacting the Criminal Investigations Section 757-382-6251.

Any potential scam calls are asked to be reported to Chesapeake police.
