Man found dead in hotel room after barricade situation in Chesapeake

A man was found dead inside an Inn Suites room after an hours-long barricade situation in Chesapeake Tuesday night, police said.

CHESAPEAKE, Va., (WVEC) -- A barricade situation ended with a man found dead inside an Intown Suites room, Detective D. B. Weir said.

Around 8:03 p.m., Chesapeake Police and Fire departments were called to the 1500 block of Crossways Boulevard to a report of a nude man who had locked himself in a hotel room with water running and the fire alarm activated, Weir said.

A fire crew made entry into the hotel room and saw the man in the bathroom waving a butcher knife and speaking incoherently, he said.

The crew left the room and police began making attempts to contact the man, Weir said.

After several hours of unsuccessful attempts to contact him, SWAT was called.

SWAT used a camera to see inside the room and the man appeared to be incapacitated, Weir said.

SWAT entered the room and the man was pronounced dead around 11:56 p.m. There was no one else in the room.

The cause of death is under investigation and the identity of the man is being withheld at this time until next of kin can be notified, Weir said.
