CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WVEC) -- A groundbreaking ceremony was held to mark the beginning of the construction for the new Naval Exchanged (NEX) on Monday.

The event was held by Naval Support Activity (NSA) Hampton Roads-Northwest Annex.

The construction will increase the size of the current NEX from 4,500 square feet to approximately 6,700 square feet.

The store will not only include a wide selection of joint force uniform items, food and beverages with a walk-in cooler, an expanded food bar, healthy choice items, fresh fruit, and household items, it will also include a gas station and a barber shop.

The project will cost around $3 million, and is expected to be completed by Spring 2017.

The NEX is open to active military members and their families.
