Police: Man loses consciousness, dies while in custody in Chesapeake

William Green, 46, was in custody for driving under the influence, but lost consciousness and died at the scene. Police and medics tried to resuscitate him.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — Chesapeake police said a man lost consciousness and died while in custody during a traffic stop overnight.

Police responded around midnight Saturday to 911 calls in the 2100 block of South Military Highway of a man acting erratically.

The man drove off in a vehicle before police stopped him.

That's when the man pulled over on the side of South Military Highway and walked away from the car.

Police arrived on the scene and identified him as 46-year-old William Green, of Chesapeake.

During their investigation, officers determined Green was under the influence.

He was taken into custody but before he could be taken to jail Green lost consciousness, police said.

Medics and officers tried to resuscitate him but he died at the scene.

Chesapeake police officials said the incident is still being investigated.
