Public gets glimpse into future of Bowers Hill Interchange

There are two proposals on the table regarding Improvements to the Bowers Hill Interchange.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — There are two proposals on the table right now regarding Improvements to the Bowers Hill Interchange in Chesapeake. On Thursday, the public had a chance to see the options, ask questions and give feedback.

The first option would widen I-664, creating a new lane in each direction. It would also include barriers that would create separation between motorists on I-664 and U.S. 58. A new ramp and bridge would also be constructed allowing motorists on U.S. Route 58 to easily connect with I-264 East.

The other option is more of a full interchange reconstruction. It, too, would add an additional lane in each direction on I-664. It would also reposition and, in some cases, eliminate ramps allowing motorists to more easily connect to surrounding highways. There would also be barriers placed between the highways to prevent weaving back and forth.

Many people who live along the Bowers Hill Interchange were at the meeting. They are very curious about the changes being proposed in their backyard.

“We have 18-wheelers cutting across 6 lanes of highway all the time and we hear horns, see lots of accidents,” said Ann McCoy.

“I’ve been here for 40 something years, and, as a senior, you don’t want to have to uproot and move somewhere else or have trouble getting out of the neighborhood,” said Josephine Smith.

“I feel like the public should always be involved, rather than have a select few pick what they want to do, instead of asking everyone else how it will impact them,” said Danny McCoy.

VDOT is expected to make a recommendation to the state sometime in June on which option they think is best.
