CHESAPEAKE, Va. — Health officials in Chesapeake say a raccoon has tested positive for rabies in the Western Branch section of the city.

The Chesapeake Health Department said the raccoon was found in the back yard of a home in the 3000 block of Tyre Neck Road on February 5.

Residents and visitors take the following steps to prevent families and pets from being exposed to rabies:

  • Eliminate outdoor food sources around the home
  • Avoid contact between yourself (and your pets) and wild animals or stray dogs and cats
  • Vaccinate all pets against rabies because it's the law

All contact with wild or stray animals should be avoided. If anyone is bitten or scratched by an animal, immediately wash the wound thoroughly and contact your physician or the Health Department for further advice.

If your pet has been in contact with an animal that might be rabid, check for injuries and contact the Chesapeake Animal Control at (757) 382-8080 or the Chesapeake Health Department at (757) 382-8672.
