HAMPTON, Va. — Hampton Fire and Rescue's new fire chief is a familiar face.

Fire Chief Jason Monk has been serving in that role as interim fire chief since September of 2017, following the retirement of David E. Layman.

City Manager Mary Bunting named him to the job permanently on Friday.

"After an extensive search process that netted a very competitive pool of candidates, I have appointed our own Jason H. Monk to be the permanent Fire Chief," Bunting said in a news release. "It is especially gratifying to have found the best candidate for this critical role internally. Jason has worked in nearly every aspect of our fire and medical service and has served his entire 22-year career with Hampton."

Monk previously served as the division's deputy chief, and has been a part of Hampton Fire and Rescue since 1997.
