Man arrested in double shooting at Hampton Zaxby's

Christian Stevenson, 20, has been charged with two counts of maiming, one count of shooting into an occupied vehicle, one count of attempt robbery, and one count of use of a firearm in commission of a felony.

HAMPTON, Va. (WVEC) -- A man was arrested in connection with the double shooting in Hampton on Friday afternoon.

Christian Stevenson, 20, of the first block of Tide Mill Lane, has been charged with two counts of maiming, one count of shooting into an occupied vehicle, one count of attempt robbery, and one count of use of a firearm in commission of a felony.

Police dispatch received the call of a shooting at about 4:43 p.m. in the 2200 block of Todds Lane.

The victims were 27-year-old women, one was from Hampton the other from Newport News. They were in a parked vehicle in the parking lot of Zaxby's. When police arrived on the scene they found the women suffering from gunshot wounds.

They were taken to a local hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.

An investigation revealed that Stevenson and an unknown suspect had contacted the two women to purchase illegal narcotics and arranged to meet them at the Zaxby’s parking lot.

Both suspects approached the victims in the parking lot, when Stevenson displayed a firearm and demanded property from the victims, police said.

One of the victims displayed a firearm, and shots were exchanged.

The two women and Stevenson were struck by gunfire.

Witnesses heard gunfire

A woman named Sheena was performing her typical duties as manager of Soaps and Suds on Todds Lane when she heard the gunfire.

“We just finished shift change, and we heard a popping noise,” said Shenna. “People were running around over there in the parking lot and everyone looked all nervous.”

Sheena, who has a background in the medical field, sprang into action.

“I just ran out in traffic across the street,” said Sheena. “And the young lady was bleeding, people were gathering gloves and napkins and stuff.”

Sheena said the first victim was hit twice, once in the head and once in the hand.

“So we compressed the young lady’s wounds and we were talking to her calm. That's when we found out that her friend had also been shot,” said Sheena.

Sheena said the second woman was struck in the upper body. EMT’s quickly arrived and transported both victims to the hospital. That’s when Sheena discovered there was a third person inside the car.

“They said there was a baby in the car as well, but the baby wasn’t injured,” said Sheena.

As for who fired the shots, Sheena said she saw at least one man leaving the scene.

“Somebody fled, like they got in a car, and hauled tail,” said Sheena.

Sheena is glad she was able to provide some help, especially considering she wasn’t even supposed to be working Friday.

“The world has its magical ways, maybe I was meant to be here,” said Sheena.
