One person killed, another injured in Hampton double shooting

Two men were found shot on Ridgeway Avenue late Sunday night. Police identified the victim fatally shot.

Police say they are investigating a fatal double shooting overnight in Hampton.

Officers were called to Ridgeway Avenue just before 11:30 p.m. Sunday, near West Pembroke Avenue and Westwood Avenue where they found two adult men in the road suffering from gunshot wounds.

Investigators said one of the men was pronounced dead at the scene. Police later identified the victim as 37-year-old Dorsey L. Stephenson. The second gunshot victim was taken to the hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.

“He was a good guy, he was over my house plenty of times, plays with my kids, a very animated character," said Jacob Frickman, who worked alongside Stephenson for the past three years at numerous Hampton Roads construction projects. Frickman is the foreman of Rod Busters, Inc.

“Good bridge builder, good damn builder, good tunnel builder," said Frickman. "He worked on all the projects, I-64, 264, CBBT Tunnel, we lost a really good builder."

Frickman has no idea what Stephenson was doing on Ridgeway Avenue late Sunday night.

“I don’t know of any kind of gang activity or nothing like that,” said Frickman.

Frickman demands justice for his friend.

“I hope who ever did this definitely goes down and does not get to see the light of day again," said Frickman.

The shooting is leaving neighbors uneasy. G.L. Graves has lived on Ridegway Avenue more than 50 years. He said this once quiet neighborhood, is now a thing of the past.

“In the last year it's gotten worse and you just hope it doesn't happen,” Graves said.

Graves said gunshots woke him up Sunday night. He said after he heard the gun go off, a car sped off.

He laid in bed for a while then heard people yelling and screaming just right outside his door.

“It sounded like the person may have emptied a handgun,” Graves said.

Graves lives feet away from where he said the men were laying.

“It has gotten to the place if you hear anything, you just hope no gunshots come through the walls.,” Graves said. “I don't know of anyone ever being shot in my community since moving here."

Many of Graves' neighbors were too scared to go on camera. Several said they want to move. Graves said he's no longer shocked, which is why he prays over his neighborhood daily.

"There's a whole lot of hate but the Bible says love your enemy, do good to them who spitefully use you and that's what I try to do,” Graves said.

Rod Busters, Inc. in Smithfield started a Gofundme for his family.

Frickman said what’s most devastating is that Stephenson had so many dreams that will be left unfulfilled.

“He’s been talking about him and his girlfriend are going to try and throw down on a house and get married, I don’t know if he mentioned that to her, but he liked his life and generally was happy," said Frickman.
