HAMPTON, Va. (WVEC) -- Hampton police have designated the lobby of its police headquarters as an exchange zone for online holiday gift purchases this season.

The building is located at 40 Lincoln Street.

The lobby will be open starting on Dec. 1 from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. The designated area will close to online exchange purchases on Dec. 31.

Police are encouraging people who want to use the area to park in the designated visitor parking in the City Hall parking lots.

Here are a few tips for those not wanting to use the lobby to exchange online purchases:

  • Bring another person along when buying or selling to minimize the chance of robbery.

  • Meet the buyer at his or her bank for large purchases such as a car. The buyer withdraws the cash and hands it to the seller — or the seller can get a bank check instead — and the buyer takes the car.

  • Meet in a well-lighted public place for smaller items. Bring a cell phone, and tell a family member where you’re going.
