NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- A multi-vehicle accident in Newport News sent four people to the hospital Wednesday morning, fire officials say.

The incident took place near the intersection of Jefferson Avenue and Lee Road, around 6:46 a.m.

Crews arrived to find two people trapped in two separate vehicles. It took about 20 minutes to free those individuals.

A total of six vehicles were involved in the accident.

Steve Pincus with the Newport News Fire Department tells 13News Now four people were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

One firefighter suffered a minor injury.

All travel was initially stopped, however, fire officials say two southbound lanes are now open.
