NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) — A TSA employee discovered a loaded gun in a carry-on bag while working the x-ray machine at Newport News/Williamsburg International airport.
The weapon was a .380 caliber handgun and loaded with six bullets, including one in the chamber. Transportation Safety Administration officials called the police and the man, who is a resident of Newport News, was questioned by Newport News Airport Police.
Police took the gun and cited the man on weapons charges.
TSA reminds people who bring weapons to the checkpoint, even those with gun carry permits, that they are subject to federal civil penalties up to $13,000. A typical first offense carries a $3,900 fine and the full list of penalties can be found here.

Norfolk International airport has set a new record for guns found in a calendar year at their TSA checkpoint. As of November 5, TSA agents found 18 loaded guns in carry-on bags.
