NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- A man who allegedly robbed a taxi cab driver in Newport News is in police custody.

The robbery took place March 15, 2014, with the victim, a 43-year-old Virginia Beach man, reporting it to authorities March 18.

The victim told police he had been robbed in the area of the 1300 block of Garden Drive in Newport News. The incident started when the victim picked up the suspect around 12:45 a.m. in the 800 block of Goff Street in Norfolk. The suspect told the driver he wanted to be taken to Garden Drive in Newport News and gave the driver directions.

Upon arrival, when the driver told the suspect the amount of the fare, the suspect displayed a handgun and demanded the victim's wallet and cash. The driver complied and the suspect fled the scene on foot.

Detectives investigated the incident and, on March 31, 2014, warrants were filed charging the suspect with one count each of robbery, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, as well as two counts of larceny of a credit card.

On April 24, 2016, authorities in St. George, South Carolina told Newport News officials that the suspect, identified as 28-year-old Travelle Dia'sha Mcneil, of Newport News, was in their custody. The Newport News Police Department Fugitive Apprehension Unit returned Mcneil to Newport News.

Mcneil is currently in the custody of the Newport News City Jail.
