NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) — A Newport News man was sentenced to 45 years in prison on Thursday for his role in a 2009 murder.

On April 17, 31-year-old Bryan Lamar Brown was convicted by a jury for his role in the murder of Louis Joseph Jr. in Newport News. Brown's co-defendants, Mark Xavier Wallace of Williamsburg, and Joseph James Cain Benson of Boston were also convicted in the same murder.

According to court documents, Joseph was beaten and shot multiple times at his home while he babysat a 5-year-old. Brown, Benson, and Wallace planned to rob Joseph's home to steal money and drugs.

Brown took the co-defendants to Joseph’s house, and he supplied two firearms that were used to commit the murder. After the murder, Brown drove Benson, and Wallace away from the scene.

A short time later, Brown transported the guns to New York City to be resold for profit. Little did Brown know, law enforcement had a court-authorized wiretap and overheard Brown setting up the deal to get rid of the murder weapons.

Benson and Wallace are scheduled for sentencing on July 24 and August 6, respectively.
