NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) — Police identified the man who was found unresponsive with a gunshot wound in the street and later died as 26-year-old Steven Christopher Richardson.
Around 1:34 a.m., police and fire officials received a call of an unresponsive man on the ground in the 600 block of Ridley Circle where the victim lived.
Arriving crews found Richardson and tried to resuscitate him, PIO Sgt. Randal Bailey said.
The 26-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.
Bailey said the matter is being investigated as a homicide.
Members of the Newport News Police Department and local faith-based leaders will hold a "community walk" Thursday, November 8 at 3 p.m. The corner of Ivy Avenue and 16th Street will be the meeting point for the walk.
Chief Steve Drew described the walk as a joint effort between police and faith leaders to establish a system of care through prayer and citizen engagement.
