Newport News police to use new crime-fighting technology

The new technology can be used to detect gunfire and alert police the exact location a gun was discharged.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Newport News Police Department's Chief Steve Drew and Mayor McKinley Price announced on Tuesday that they plan to utilize a new crime-fighting technology: ShotSpotter.

The technology can be used to detect gunfire and alert the police. The software uses sensors that detect ballistic sounds and GPS technology to track the exact location of the sound.

Police and dispatch centers are alerted of a discharged weapon within 60 seconds.

Newport News hopes to implement the new technology in some area of the city by mid-June.
