NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- Virginia State Police are working to determine what caused a fatal crash on the James River Bridge Wednesday afternoon.

Police received a call about a car fire shortly after 4 p.m. on the southbound lanes of Route 17.

A 2015 Ford F250 was driving in the southbound lanes of Rt. 17 when the driver struck a 1996 Ford Crown Victoria. The Crown Victoria ignited and became fully engulfed in flames due to the crash, and stuck a third vehicle in front of it.

The driver of the Crown Victoria died on impact.

The driver of the Ford F250, Charles Mitchell Jr. has been charged with reckless driving.

Police say that alcohol was not a factor in this crash.
