There were three people in the car at the time and all three had to be extricated. A 28-year-old man and 20-year-old woman in the driver seat and front passenger seat sustained serious injuries.  A 21-year-old man in the back seat suffered life-threatening injuries.

Shortly after the accident, a second vehicle with one person hit the first car. The driver of the second car was a man, and he was not injured.

On March 8, that passenger in the back seat, identified as Dallas N. Blowe of Newport News, died from his injuries in the hospital. The woman passenger remains in the hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.
