NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) -- Virginia State Police troopers cited a tractor trailer driver after a wreck involving six vehicles caused huge traffic back-ups on Interstate 664 Monday.

VSP spokeswoman Sgt. Michelle Anaya said the crash happened shortly before 7:50 a.m.

Northbound traffic coming out of the Monitor Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel came to a stop. The tractor trailer hit a pick-up truck, trapping at least one person in the truck. Four vehicles were involved in the initial impact. Two others on the southbound side of the interstate were hit by debris.

Medics took the driver of the pick-up truck to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

The citation the tractor trailer driver received was for following too closely.

Anaya said all lanes of the interstate reopened by 10:25 a.m.
