Man killed following construction accident in Newport News identified

One man was killed, a second was injured after some steel fell from the second floor on the construction site.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Police have identified one man was killed following an accident at a Newport News construction site.

According to police, the accident happened around 7:45 a.m. Tuesday in the 700 block of Lakefront Commons, at City Center. 

The area is an active construction zone. 

Two men were hurt -- one with life-threatening injuries -- and both were rushed to the hospital. The man with life-threatening injuries was pronounced dead at the hospital. The other man has injuries to his arm.

Police said 42-year-old Jose Ramos-Enrriquez of McGaheysville, Virginia was the man who died.

Both workers were employed by the steel subcontractor. 

The construction site is for a new campus expansion for Ferguson, the largest plumbing wholesaler in the country. 

At the time of the incident, W. M. Jordan Company’s project superintendent immediately administered first aid until emergency response personnel arrived on the scene.

W. M. Jordan Company and Ferguson Enterprises are working with all project partners to continue a full investigation and will share more details as they become available.

W. M. Jordan Company has had no recordable safety incidents for the past two years and maintains the highest possible safety rating with an EMR of .68.
